Jewish Sports Quotes
When I was playing, I used to resent being singled out as a Jewish ballplayer,” he said. “I wanted to be known as a great ballplayer, period....Lately, though, I find myself wanting to be remembered not only as a great ballplayer, but even more as a great Jewish ballplayer. I realize now, more than I used to, how important a part I played in the lives of a generation of Jewish kids who grew up in the 30̓s.

Posted on Sunday, April 03 @ 07:50:22 UTC Jews in Sports

The JJC in Commack has inducted it's 13th class of athletes into it's Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. This class includes:

Isaac Berger - Weightlifting
Jay Fiedler - Football
Mitch Gaylord - Gymnastics
Shawn Green - Baseball
Ryan Levinson - Disabled Cyclist
Gladys Heldman - Tennis
Julie Heldman - Tennis
Marty Hogan - Racquetball
Joe Jacobi - Kayak
Shirley Povich - Sportswriter
Abe Saperstein - Basketball
Bob Stein - Football & Basketball

The Hall of Fame was started because there was "a lot of prejudice and there weren't that many Jews" in Long Island and desire to tell the public about the role Jews have played in sports.

See more information about the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the Interview about the Induction Ceremony.
