Jewish Sports Quotes

Dodgers Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax did not pitch in the opening game of the 1965 World Series because the game fell on Yom Kippur. Don Drysdale, who pitched in Koufax' place, gave up 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

"I bet right now you are wishing that I was Jewish, too,"

-- Don Drysdale to manager Walt Alston

Tips: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Sports Nicknames And The Jews
Posted on Thursday, April 28 @ 07:52:59 UTC Jews in Sports

In the Jewish Week article Sports Nicknames And The Jews Thane Rosenbaum asks if having a team with a Jewish identity is good or bad.

Ajax, Amsterdam’s home team in the European professional league, has adopted Jewish symbols as both mantle and mascot.

The Good

Fans wearing all sorts of Jewish regalia, from hats, jackets and scarves emblazoned with Hebrew lettering, to Stars of David tattooed onto bodies, arrive at stadiums shouting, “Jews, Jews, Jews!” Sometimes they simply sing Jewish songs like “Hava Nagila.”

The Bad
